Wari Elite Tombs
Wari Empire
800 a.C
After the abandonment of the ceremonial center, the Wari society decided to transform Pucllana into a cemetery, for which part of the architecture was destroyed and holes were opened that would serve as tombs for the Wari lords.
The Wari bury their dead in funeral bundles. These consisted of a body with clothing and ornaments in a fetal or squatting position that began to be wrapped with a large amount of textiles and ropes until forming a large package. In some cases, layers of aromatic vegetables are placed between fabric and fabric. When the bundle reaches a regular size, it is dressed with a garment specially prepared for this purpose, similar to what a person would wear. A “false head” is placed on top, which can be made of cloth or carved wood. These bundles are accompanied by other secondary bundles of children as offerings, as well as various objects that the deceased used in life.
